Great Blue Heron Fishing in the James River. The James runs thru downtown Richmond, Va. and these birds nest on three uninhabited islands there every year using and rebuilding old nests. They are quite a sight to behold. They nest high up in the trees on the islands and can be seen from the bridges and buildings on the river-front. After the nesting season they can be found all along the river usually not in pairs. During the nesting season, both male and female attend to the nests. When the young leave the nests to fish, the Parent Herons will watch them from a short distance, even if humans are near by.
